Social Security Payment Schedule October 2026: All Dates

October 2026 Social Security and SSI payment dates by birthday group, why the 3rd-of-month payment arrives October 2, and when the 2027 COLA is announced.

October 2026 payment dates

Social Security pays most retirees on one of three Wednesdays each month, based on your birthday. People who started benefits before May 1997, and people who receive both Social Security and SSI, are paid on the 3rd. SSI is paid on the 1st. Here is how that plays out in October 2026, from the SSA 2026 payment calendar.

Why the 3rd-of-month payment arrives October 2

October 3, 2026 is a Saturday. SSA’s rule, stated in its payment date FAQ, is simple: “If your regularly scheduled payment date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal public holiday, benefits will be paid the business day before your due date.” The business day before Saturday, October 3 is Friday, October 2.

This is an early payment, not an extra one. Your November payment for this group is Tuesday, November 3, which is a normal business day, so it arrives on schedule.

Why the Wednesday dates do not move

None of the three October Wednesdays lands on a holiday. Columbus Day is Monday, October 12, 2026, according to the OPM federal holiday list. Banks and the Federal Reserve are closed that day, but no Social Security payment is scheduled for it, so the Wednesday groups are unaffected.

One practical point: if a payment date falls the day after a bank holiday, some banks post deposits a few hours later than usual. That is not the case in October 2026, because October 14 is two days after Columbus Day.

SSI in October: paid on the 1st as usual

Supplemental Security Income is paid on the first day of the month. October 1, 2026 is a Thursday, so SSI arrives that day with no shift.

SSI follows a slightly different weekend rule than Social Security. The SSA blog explains: “When the first day of the month falls on the weekend or a Federal holiday, you receive your SSI payment on the last business day before the first day of the month.” That rule matters next month. November 1, 2026 is a Sunday, so the November SSI payment arrives Friday, October 30. If you receive SSI, you will see two SSI deposits in October: one on October 1 and one on October 30. The October 30 deposit is your November payment, not a bonus. Read the November 2026 schedule for the details.

What this means for you

Here are three common situations and how October 2026 works for each.

Example 1: Retiree born on March 5, receiving Social Security only. Your birthday is in the 1st–10th group. You are paid on the second Wednesday, which is October 14, 2026. Your next payment is Tuesday, November 10, because the second Wednesday in November (November 11) is Veterans Day. The 2026 calendar shows both dates.

Example 2: Widow who has received survivor benefits since 1995. You started benefits before May 1997, so your birthday does not matter. You are in the 3rd-of-month group. Your October payment arrives Friday, October 2. Your November payment arrives Tuesday, November 3.

Example 3: Retiree with a small Social Security benefit plus SSI. Because you receive both, SSA pays Social Security on the 3rd and SSI on the 1st. In October you get SSI on Thursday, October 1 and Social Security on Friday, October 2. Then on Friday, October 30 you receive your November SSI payment early. That gives you three deposits in October and only one (Social Security on November 3) in November. Budget for the gap.

Does the October payment include a COLA?

No. The cost-of-living adjustment for 2026 was 2.8%, and it has been in your payments since January 2026 (SSA press release). The 2027 COLA is not yet announced and will not affect your October payment.

When the 2027 COLA will be announced

SSA sets each year’s COLA using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). The SSA COLA page explains that the increase is “based on the percentage increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) from the third quarter of the last year a COLA was determined to the third quarter of the current year.”

The third quarter ends September 30. The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the September CPI-W in October, and SSA announces the COLA the same day. Recent precedent:

COLA yearAnnouncedAmount
2026Friday, October 24, 20252.8%
2025Thursday, October 10, 2024Announced in the SSA press release

So expect the 2027 COLA announcement in October 2026. SSA does not publish the exact date in advance because it depends on the BLS release schedule. As of the date of this article, SSA’s press release index shows no 2027 COLA release. We will update this page and the 2026 COLA article when it is out.

When you will see the 2027 COLA in your payment

The COLA takes effect with the payment you receive in January 2027. For SSI, the increase appears one payment earlier: because January 1, 2027 is a federal holiday, the January 2027 SSI payment is paid on Thursday, December 31, 2026, and that payment carries the new rate. The same pattern happened last year: increased SSI payments began with the December 31, 2025 payment (SSA COLA fact sheet). See the 2027 schedule for every 2027 date.

What to do if your payment is late

Most late-payment worries turn out to be a bank posting delay or a misread calendar. Work through these steps in order.

  1. Confirm your date. Check the table above or the payment date calculator. A common mistake is to expect the 3rd-of-month payment on the 3rd when it was already paid on October 2.
  2. Wait three additional mailing days. SSA’s instruction on the 2026 calendar is: “If you don’t receive your payment on the expected date, please allow three additional mailing days before contacting Social Security.” For a Wednesday payment, that means waiting until the following Monday.
  3. Check with your bank or Direct Express card. Ask whether a deposit is pending. Banks sometimes hold a deposit until the next business day.
  4. Check your my Social Security account. Log in at ssa.gov to see your payment history and confirm your direct deposit details are current. A changed bank account that was never updated with SSA is a frequent cause of a missing payment.
  5. Call SSA. After the three mailing days, call 1-800-772-1213 or visit your local office. Have your Social Security number and bank details ready.

Which month does the October payment cover?

Social Security pays a month behind. The payment you receive in October 2026 is your benefit for September 2026. This matters in two situations. First, if a beneficiary dies in October, the October payment (for September) is kept, but the November payment (for October) must be returned. Second, when a COLA takes effect, SSA describes it as applying to “benefits payable in January,” meaning the December benefit paid in January. That is why a COLA announced in October shows up three months later, and why the 2026 COLA fact sheet describes the January 2026 payment as the first one with the increase.

Direct deposit changes: a timing warning

If you are switching banks, do not close the old account until the first payment lands in the new one. SSA needs time to process a direct deposit change, and a payment sent to a closed account is returned to the Treasury and reissued, which adds weeks. Change your deposit information through your my Social Security account or by calling SSA, and keep the old account open through at least one payment cycle.

Looking ahead: the rest of 2026

October is one of the simpler months. The bigger changes come later in the year:

  • November 2026: SSI paid October 30 (November 1 is a Sunday); second-Wednesday group paid Tuesday, November 10 (Veterans Day is Wednesday, November 11). Details in the November 2026 schedule.
  • December 2026: SSI paid December 1 as normal, then again on December 31 for January 2027. The 3rd-of-month group also gets its January 2027 payment on December 31, because January 3, 2027 is a Sunday.
  • January 2027: Wednesday groups paid January 13, 20 and 27, with the 2027 COLA included.

Frequently asked questions

When is Social Security paid in October 2026?

Wednesday, October 14 (born 1st–10th), Wednesday, October 21 (born 11th–20th) and Wednesday, October 28 (born 21st–31st). People paid on the 3rd get their payment Friday, October 2. SSI is paid Thursday, October 1.

Why is my payment on October 2 instead of October 3?

October 3, 2026 is a Saturday. SSA pays on the business day before a weekend or holiday, so the 3rd-of-month group is paid Friday, October 2.

Does Columbus Day change any October payment?

No. Columbus Day is Monday, October 12, 2026. No Social Security or SSI payment is scheduled for that day, so nothing moves.

Is the 2027 COLA in my October payment?

No. The 2027 COLA is expected to be announced in October 2026, but it does not change your benefit until the payment you receive in January 2027.

How long should I wait before reporting a missing payment?

SSA asks you to allow three additional mailing days after your scheduled date before contacting them.

Do I get two Social Security payments in October?

No. Each person receives one Social Security payment per month. If you also receive SSI, you get one SSI payment (October 1) and one Social Security payment (October 2).

Which group am I in if my birthday is on the 10th?

The 1st–10th group, paid on the second Wednesday. In October 2026 that is October 14.

When will the November 2026 dates be different?

November has two shifts: SSI arrives Friday, October 30 because November 1 is a Sunday, and the second-Wednesday group is paid Tuesday, November 10 because November 11 is Veterans Day.
